On one hand are the Marcel Prousts of the world, sitting in bed and typing their 10-volume novels a couple hundred words at a time. On the other are the people who get married after a one-night stand in Vegas, make minute rice in 40 seconds, and enter the Second Annual Diesel Film Racing Competition. Begun in New York in 2002, the competition challenges creative artists in 17 cities to write, shoot, edit, and score an entire film in just 24 hours.
All Miami entrant teams will be given a theme and surprise element assignments at 10 p.m. Friday and must turn in the film no longer than four minutes by 10 p.m. Saturday. The completed films will be shown June 5 at Bill Cosford Cinema. Winners in Oscar-familiar categories such as Best Picture, Best Direction, Best Actor, etc., will be regaled with cash and prizes and move on to compete against other city-level victors in a national competition. Check out www.filmracing.com for more information, applications, and past winners, including the 2007 Miami champs.
